There are four different grinding wheels from coarse to extra fine. Which grinding wheel is best depends on the condition of the edge. The more this is worn, the coarser the grinding wheel should be. The finer the diamond wheel, the sharper and smoother the edge becomes.

Diamond wheel course - rough grinding wheel for working on heavily worn edges.
Diamond disc medium - medium grinding wheel for working worn edges.
Diamond wheel fine - fine grinding wheel for re-sharpening and smoothing slightly worn edges.
Diamond wheel extra fine - very fine grinding wheel for polishing and hardening pre-sanded edges.

The life of the grinding wheel depends on the condition of the edge. When used properly, a grinding wheel will do enough for 20 to 40 pairs of skis or twice the number of snowboards.
